Live performance is a music performance given by one or more singers or instrumentalists or both. Live performances can be played in many places such as festivals, bandstands, house concerts and even the street. These are only some of the places live performances can be held at, where people can go and experience and watch/listen to musicians playing music. Promoting a performance is good because more people will know about the live performance. This can make more people turn up to the performance, which creates more money for the venue and performers. You can promote live performances by leaflets handed out and on shop/venue desks and counters. This includes posters around the place and flyers. Also you can promote live performances online. Advertising information can be put on websites so people can view the information of the event. This is a good way of promoting; this is because a high percentage of people use computers and the internet, so the promotion will be seen by a lot of people. Also social media is a good way of promoting live performances; this is because all your friends, followers and people in your area can see your advertisement for the live performances.
A tour/event manager is a person who takes care of the bookings, all the accommodation, transport, equipment and the crew involved with the tour/event. It helps organise the events so they can run smooth, without any problems for the performers and the event. If the tour event manager organised the tour/event badly then it would be disorganised and problems would occur.
Merchandise helps gain popularity this is because if people like the performer’s music then they might buy their merchandise. This includes CD’s, t-shirts, and posters and photos etc, and the artists will make money off the merchandise. Most bands have an image, for example Kiss with their specific outfits for each member. Also bands Have logos to represent their band, this logo can be easily used for more merchandise.
Performing rights are were an artist will get payments for when their song(s) are played in public, on TV, radio or performed by others. This credits the songwriters or artists for their songs. This is good because it gets the artists more money for the songs being played, as well as promoting their songs themselves.
Recording companies are companies that make and sell musical recordings. The companies maintain contacts through the music industry which can be useful. They also can make the decisions and sort out the co-ordination, marketing and can also help promote the music their selling. This is good because some record companies gain followers in the music they sell, which will create more money for the artists and the record companies. They also try and find talent for them to make money out of, where they record the artists and sell records/tickets/videos of the artist. Record companies are useful because they can deal with an artist’s copyrights as well. There are different types of record labels, including: major, mini major, major independent distributed independents and independents. The top three record labels are Sony music entertainments, universal music group and Warner music group. Sony bought out EMI and universal brought EMI music publishing. Major record labels are different to independent record. Major record labels are a large group of people who run the record label that pay for their artist’s productions that they’ve signed. They also buy out other artist’s copyright so they have the rights to their music to gain money. Major labels are very commercialised, this is good for popularity and money. This is because if a person likes a band a lot and is signed to a certain record label, then they might listen to other artists the label has signed. Also if an artist is really popular then the label will get recognised as the label that has that popular artist signed. A popular label will create more mainstream artists because they get promoted better and have more money to spend on the promotion, where they can be promoted worldwide. They specialise in popular music because this will get more money than only a selection of people would like, so they make music which will sell.
Independent record labels are a self funded record label run by one or more people. They’re also known as “indie labels” or “micro labels”. Independent labels are more responsive to sub cultural trends and genres of music. This is good because it gives other artists an opportunity rather than the popular music that sells. But all labels have a contract between the labels and the artists. The contract contains certain terms that will be carried out over a period of time. Labels agree on looking after the artist’s and develop them to a professional standard.
A music company is responsible for ensuring the songwriters and composers in the music industry receive payment when their compositions are used commercially. They have publishing contracts that creates an agreement that ensures the songwriter or composer a generation of royalties that can fund the development of new talent and secure the protection of copyright. Song writers are entitled to royalties in performances, advertising, radio, video game, media, TV, movies and live performances. Every time a songwriter’s song or composer’s song plays they will get royalties. The publishing contract includes things such as how much of the publishing of the song do the songwriter and the publisher own. It also includes how many songs the songwriter must deliver during the contract. This is because if the songwriter doesn’t make enough money, then them and the publishing company will lose out on money. Where as if they make enough songs during the contract, they could make the expected target of songs sold or maybe more. This could create another contract opportunity for the artist. There are four rights of publishing, this includes performance rights. Performance rights include live performances by the artist, it also includes if the song plays on a jukebox or radio. Print right is the rights over the printing of the artists sheet music. It also includes mechanical rights which are the rights to sell, download, reproduce via CD and includes illegal copying. The final right of publishing is synchronisation, which is when the artists music is being used in computer games, on the television, in movies and in advertising.
Art management is someone who guides the professional career of artists in the music industry. Artist managers book gigs for artists and find them work. This will help the artists get money and become more popular because more work and gigs will be there for them to play. They also help give advice and help council artists concerning any professional matters, decisions and any plans which may affect their careers. This is useful because they can give their opinion and advice to the artist to become more successful and could end up with more money and fame. They also oversee the day-to-day business affairs of the artists which can give the artist more time writing songs and becoming more successful. Their main duties are to help support the artist’s development to become more successful. This would include building up the artists fan base. The manager does this by making and showing demo CD’s, plan promotional activities, create social network identities and book shows. By creating social network identities this can get more people following the artist and for the consumers to know what’s new, and what the artist has been up to during the day or telling followers about the latest events and events just gone. An artist management contract is an agreement between the artist and a manager. The manager gains compensation which is a percentage of the artist’s earnings.
The role of the performer is to perform. Whether it’s on a live performance with their group/band or record songs. Some performers write songs to perform. If they write a good song, it can become popular and make the whole band popular. This will give the band more money to work with. They also record songs and can make money off the songs by making an album or single with the songs they have recorded. The artist/performer has an image towards the consumer and this can make the artist popular. As well as this they have a main genre/style the songs the band write and play. This will gain popularity in the people who like that style of music. Performers work alongside with many people. This can includes tour managers that take care of the bookings to all the accommodations, transport, equipment and the crew involved on the tour. Also performers work with record companies that help sell and make the performers recordings and make them gain more popularity and money. Music publishing companies work with the performers on receiving the right payments for the songs they produce when their played commercially. Arts management work with them to help guide the performer’s professional career and give advice and make decisions that can affect the performer’s career. Performers also work with venue/stage managers this is when they are booking concerts and have to organise the stage and the set including the lighting and the sound with the light and sound technicians.
The skills needed to be a performer are to be able to perform in front of an audience. A performer needs to be able to be good at what they perform such as good at guitar if their guitarist, good at singing if their singer. I think a good performer needs to be unique in what they do, for them to stand out in front of all the other performers out there. Some performers have good song writing skills and can make good songs people will find good and they can get popular. Performers also have to have good social skills to organise recording sessions and bookings for gigs. This will get them more popular with more gigs and songs.
To be a performer you don’t really need qualifications but qualifications do help such as taking music performance in college or any music course. There are also specialist courses to help improve in certain instruments and singing such as rock school for guitar. To be a performer/artist the pay is low when performers first start performing. This is because people don’t know them so the performer won’t be that popular. If a performer becomes more popular they can perform at better places and have better pay. This means they can get better equipment and more fans. The more popular a performer gets, the more money they can get from performing. Performers can travel anywhere and perform. Depending on where you book to perform and as a performer can get more popular, the better venues they can perform at. A career progression when being a performer is hard. This is because there are a lot of performers emerging to try and become big. But as a performer gets more popular, they get more attention from companies and record labels. This is because they could earn money from promoting the performer. An example of performers is the Beatles. The Beatles started off playing in small venues and clubs through Liverpool, and as they got more popular they became well known around the world and made a lot of money in the process of becoming one of the most popular bands at the time. Another example I know is a performer called Sam Draisey who organises open mic nights around Britain mainly in the west midlands. He is a musician singer/songwriter and he promotes his albums at the open mic nights. He only has one arm and is becoming his popularity in the music industry is slowly growing.
